"Muslims and Christians, Friends or Foes?"

Professor Quinn discussed basic areas of agreement and disagreement between these two major global and local faith communities and suggested possibilities for healthy relations between other religious groups as well. Doctor Quinn is working on a book about the image of Islam in Christian thought. 

Frederick Quinn is Adjunct Professor of Political Science at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, and Adjunct Professor of History at Utah State University, Logan. An Episcopal priest, he has published extensively on law, religion, and history. A former advisor on international issues to the Dean of Washington National Cathedral, Dr. Quinn is a veteran of thirty years in the American Foreign Service, and was an advisor to Chief Justice Warren E. Burger on the Bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution. His advanced degrees are from the University of California at Los Angeles.

SPECIAL INTERESTS: Preaching and leadership of worship, adult education, family education and Sunday School, creative uses of liturgy, including imaginative family services, healing ministry, outreach ministries.

PARISH WORK: served as interim rector or assisting clergy in several parishes including some of Washington’s largest to some of Southern Maryland’s smallest. Considerable experience in pastoral counseling, youth work (all ages), developing lay leadership, fund raising and stewardship planning, building music and community ministries, expanding international outreach. Strong interest in church growth strategies, media use by church. Hands-on experience in conducting vestry meetings, managing physical plant, school, diocesan liaison, working with church committees, including altar guilds, women's, men's groups, special interest groups, such as vocational changes, bereavement, meditation groups; extensive work in hospital, home visitations. Skills in crisis management and conflict resolution, consensus building, use of participatory management.

REPRESENTATIVE COURSES: Old and New Testament Survey, individual books of the Bible, the Psalms, Christianity and the Worlds’ Religions, 20th Century Christians, The Reformation, The Prophets, Bluegrass Spirituality, The Healing Ministry, drama-craft activities.

EDUCATION: PhD, University of California at Los Angeles, (History); MA UCLA (Modern European History); MA UCLA (African Studies); Diploma in Theological Studies, Virginia Theological Seminary. Numerous articles in The Living Church, The Christian Century, The Anglican Digest and other publications. Former chair, Environment Committee, Diocese of Washington; founding member, National Church’s Environmental Stewardship Committee. Member, Committee on Constitution and Canons, Diocese of Washington.

FAMILY STATUS: Married to Charlotte Alison Smith Quinn, a professional historian of Africa; two children, Christopher, an attorney in Chicago, Ill., and Alison, a student in Spain.

A RECENT EXPERIENCE: building the Anglican Congregation in Warsaw, Poland, from holding periodic to weekly family-oriented services with strong lay leadership. Was replaced by a full-time permanent chaplain from Great Britain.
